Network for the development of CO2 transport and infrastructure

Switzerland has set ambitious climate targets. To achieve them, the implementation of carbon capture, utilisation, transport and storage (CCUTS) is essential, particularly in sectors where emissions are difficult to avoid – such as waste management, cement production and, in some cases, the chemical industry.

To enable the implemenation of carbon capture, transport and storage (CCS), a viable CO2-compatible transport pipeline network is needed. 

The aim is to enable the captured CO2 to be transported efficiently and safely to suitable storage sites over the long term.

The Association of the Swiss Gas Industry (VSG) is launching the CO2NNECT network together with its partners GVM and Ganeos. The goal is to connect the relevant actors in the field of CCS in Switzerland and to work together on the regulatory, financial and technical framework conditions for pipeline-based CO2 transport in Switzerland. The administrative office is located at the VSG.

Objectives and purpose

Why is the CO2NNECT initiative needed?

Achieving net zero requires the capture and storage of CO2. This also includes efficient CO2 transport infrastructure to safely and permanently transport captured CO2 to suitable storage locations. CO2NNECT is creating a common platform for this purpose.

What does CO2NNECT want to achieve?

CO2NNECT is laying the groundwork for a safe, efficient and sustainable long-term CO2 pipeline network in Switzerland.

What is CO2NNECT working on?

The network is addressing the entire range of technical, regulatory, financial and organisational issues – from quantity, purity and pressure to routes, safety requirements and investment conditions.

Who is involved?

Relevant stakeholders from business, infrastructure, associations and public authorities are brought together to pool knowledge, coordinate standards and develop joint solutions.

Is the international aspect being taken into account?

CO2NNECT supports early coordination with European transport networks and suitable storage locations to enable long-term integration of the Swiss infrastructure.

Who runs CO2NNECT and who can participate?

The network is supported by relevant stakeholders from business, associations and the public sector and is open to interested companies, authorities, clubs and associations. This allows additional stakeholders to get involved and actively participate in shaping the development of CO2 infrastructure.
